ChatGPT reads Telegram through your own ChatMate bot. Create it in @chatmate_aibot and connect the chats you want. It takes a couple of minutes in Telegram and is done once for every AI.

Fill in the connection
Name it ChatMate. Under Connection, paste the address. Choose OAuth for authentication.

Tick I understand and want to continue, then press Create as a plugin. ChatGPT lists the tools it found; install the plugin.
Sign in with Telegram
ChatGPT opens a ChatMate page. Sign in with Telegram and allow access. ChatGPT gets only the chats you connected to your bot.

Start a new chat, type @, pick ChatMate and ask: “Who is waiting for my reply in Telegram?”

Limits
- Pro reads onlyOpenAI lets Pro connect custom servers with read and fetch permissions, so ChatGPT on Pro can read your chats but not send.
- Plus, Go and FreeOpenAI’s help on custom servers doesn’t list them. If Plugins shows Add custom MCP server, your plan can add ChatMate.
- Deep research reads onlyIn deep research, custom plugins can only read and fetch.
- History starts at connectionOlder messages, secret chats and channels are not available.
Questions about ChatGPT.
- Is this a ChatGPT bot for Telegram?
No. Those bots put ChatGPT inside Telegram. ChatMate does the reverse: your own Telegram chats become something your ChatGPT can read, in the ChatGPT you already use.
- Do I need developer mode?
No. Since 1 October 2026 ChatGPT adds custom MCP servers straight from Plugins. You only confirm the risk warning for each server.
- Which ChatGPT plan do I need?
OpenAI’s help on 25 October 2026: full custom MCP support with write actions on Business and Enterprise/Edu, read and fetch on Pro. On Business, only admins and owners create plugins for custom servers.
- How does ChatGPT ask before sending?
Write actions need your confirmation by default. The card offers Deny, Allow once, Allow low-risk actions and Always allow, and OpenAI may check a message more strictly before it goes out. The default level is in Settings › Plugins › Permissions.
- Does it work in dots?
Dots, OpenAI’s agent for Pro and Business Premium (Pro outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK), use the plugins installed for your account with the same permissions. OpenAI doesn’t say yet whether custom MCP plugins count. Asking a dot to draft a reply doesn’t let it send one.
- I connected a new chat and ChatGPT doesn’t see it
A connection sees the chats that were connected when you allowed access. Connect ChatMate again from the connect page to add the new ones.
