ChatMate for Codex

Questions pile up in Telegram. Codex answers them in the repo.

One codex mcp add command gives Codex your connected chats and groups. Ask it to read what a partner or a teammate wrote, then change the code or the docs to match.

Codex CLI in a terminal: the owner asks it to answer the partner’s API questions that Mila collected in a Telegram group. Codex finds the messages, reads the thread and writes the answers into docs/faq.md.

Connect Codex.

Codex keeps its servers in ~/.codex/config.toml. The CLI, the IDE extension and the ChatGPT desktop app share that file, so you add ChatMate once.

First, your personal bot

Codex reads Telegram through your own ChatMate bot. Create it in @chatmate_aibot and connect the chats you want. It takes a couple of minutes in Telegram and is done once for every AI.

How to create the bot and connect chats
  1. Add the server

Run this in a terminal. Codex saves ChatMate to ~/.codex/config.toml and opens the sign-in in your browser.

    Terminal
codex mcp add chatmate --url https://www.getchatmate.com/api/connector/mcp
  2. Sign in with Telegram

Sign in with Telegram and allow access. If the browser didn’t open, start the sign-in again; on a remote machine add --no-browser.

    Terminal
    codex mcp login chatmate
  3. Start a new session and ask

Codex loads servers when a session starts. Run /mcp to see chatmate, then ask: “Mila collected the partner’s API questions in Telegram. Answer them in docs/faq.md.”

  4. Or add it in the ChatGPT desktop app

    SettingsMCP serversAdd server

Choose Streamable HTTP, name it chatmate and paste the address. Save, press Restart, then Authenticate.

What works in Codex.

Codex reads the chats you connected, from the moment you connected them and up to 60 days back.

  • Questions and specs from chats

A partner’s questions in a group, a teammate’s notes in a private chat: Codex finds them and works from the original wording.

  • Files people sent

Logs, PDFs and screenshots from connected chats, opened when the task needs them.

  • A reply in Telegram

Ask Codex to tell the person when the change is in. With the approval mode below, it asks before anything goes out.

  • One setup, three places

The same config.toml serves the CLI, the IDE extension and the Codex inside the ChatGPT desktop app.

Limits

  • Cloud tasks aren’t coveredOpenAI doesn’t document custom MCP servers for Codex cloud tasks yet. Count on the CLI, the IDE extension and the desktop app.
  • Free and GoOpenAI lists Codex for Free and Go in the desktop app only, as it rolls out. The CLI and IDE extension need Plus or higher, or an API key.
  • New session after addingA running session doesn’t see a server added after it started.
  • History starts at connectionOlder messages, secret chats and channels are not available.

Questions about Codex.

More answers in Help
Is this the same as adding ChatMate to ChatGPT?

No. ChatGPT on the web uses plugins and doesn’t read Codex files. Codex keeps its own list in ~/.codex/config.toml, which the CLI, the IDE extension and the ChatGPT desktop app share.

How do I make Codex ask before sending to Telegram?

In ~/.codex/config.toml, add default_tools_approval_mode = "writes" under [mcp_servers.chatmate]. Codex then asks before every tool that isn’t marked read-only, and sending is one of them.

Where did the Codex app go?

In July 2026 OpenAI moved it into the new ChatGPT desktop app. Update the app and Codex is inside, with the same MCP servers as the CLI.

Do I need an api_id or a Telegram session?

No. Codex never logs in to Telegram. Your personal ChatMate bot receives the chats you connect, and Codex signs in to ChatMate with OAuth.

How do I remove it?

Run codex mcp remove chatmate. To disconnect the grant itself, open My data in your bot or on the site.

Plug your chats into your AI.

Works with ChatGPT and Claude.
